Once again, the Primo Nebiolo Memorial proved to be an unmissable athletics show. A great event – attended by 4,600 spectators – which thrilled the Turinese audience, who greeted the show with its usual warmth and many applauses, especially during the competitions which involved the most important Italian athletes. Many guests of honour were present, included Fidal President Franco Arese, The Rectors of the Università and Politecnico di Torino Prof. Ezio Pelizzetti and Prof. Francesco Profumo. Once again a wonderful evening dedicated to an unforgettable man of sport, Primo Nebiolo, eleven years after his death. 15 competitions, 138 athletes for more than two hours of great athletics.
The Cuban champion Dayron Robles was the undisputed star of the evening and won his race, the 110 hurdles, with a great time: 13”08. During this edition of the Nebiolo Memorial, other athletes have also excelled in their performances. Abubaker Kaki doubled last year’s success in the 800 meters with a fantastic 1’43”.47 and Michael Frater did not disappoint the expectations of his fans cutting for first the finishing line in the 100 meters (10”21). Fabio Cerutti, who arrived third with 10’’31, was on the podium with the Jamaican athlete.
The evening started with the hammer throw. Nicola Vizzoni finished second with a throw of 76.38, after Sergei Litvinov (the only athlete who got over 78 meters with a throw of 78.01). The Italian athlete Libania Grenot won the women’s 400 meters in 51”54, while Elisa Cusma got on the third step of the podium in the 1500 meters, which is not her specialty, declaring to be very happy with the result. The winner of the triple jump was the Cuban David Girat who realized a measure of 17.21 meters, while the Italian athlete Fabrizio Donato placed second (17.08). Daniele Greco was 4th with a jump of 16.48 meters. The women’s high jump was won by the Russian Athlete Irina Gordeyeva who jumped 1,97 meters. The American athlete Chaunté Howard Howe, after the wonderful performance at the Golden Gala in Rome (where she jumped 2.03 meters, same measure obtained by Vlasic who won the competition because of a performance characterized by fewer errors) placed third, jumping not more than 1.92.
The Meeting of Torino – Primo Nebiolo Memorial proved to be, like every year, an important event for many athletes and a must for sports fans.
