For many people the Torino Meeting
is still the same as in 1963, as if nothing had changed since
then. From 1963 to 1983, Torino was the stage for the Meeting
in which famous national and international athletes such as
Livio Berruti and Sara Simeoni, “El Caballo” Alberto
Juantorena and Sebastian Coe took part. The last Meeting was
held in 1983, closing with a great performance of Said Auita.
Only twelve years later, after finding new enthusiasm and,
above all, new funds, the Torino Meeting was again presented
to the public.
Thanks to Riccardo D’Elicio, Diego Bastino and Franco
Arese (the main organisers of the former meeting), Ludovico
Perricone and Gianni Romeo the great Athletics returned to
Torino in 1995. The project was ambitious, but, considering
everything done up to now… feasible. After only two
years, the meeting has actually entered in the IAAF circuit,
first as “Permit Meeting”, and later on as “Grand
Prix II” (since the last edition). Since its revival,
the Torino meeting has had a twofold soul: on one side the
great champions, on the other the talented emerging athletes.
Torino was actually the place where popular athletes such
as Hicham El Guerrouy and Mary Jones – just to name
two of them – along with well-established champions
such as Marlene Ottey, Fiona May, Ivan Pedroso, turned their
first steps towards the international panorama.
Also the 14th edition of the International Track and Field
Meeting of Torino will take place in the evening on the track
of the Nebiolo Stadium. And once again, we are certain, the
best national and international athletes will honour the memory
of the greatest President with exceptional performances and
once again Torino will be present with its great and affectionate
audience.
